Traffic Stop Leads to Arrest on Multiple Drug Charges

Christian County, KY – On the evening of January 29, 2025, at approximately 11:30 PM, a traffic stop conducted by the Christian County Sheriff’s Office resulted in the arrest of an Indiana man on several charges related to narcotics possession offenses.

While on routine patrol, a deputy observed a vehicle traveling northbound on Pennyrile Parkway with an unilluminated rear license plate. The deputy initiated a traffic stop near mile marker 3 and made contact with the driver, 40-year-old Matthew Butler, and the front seat passenger.

During the stop, the deputy detected a strong odor of suspected marijuana emanating from the vehicle. After obtaining the necessary vehicle documents, the deputy asked Butler to step out of the vehicle and informed him that a search of the vehicle and his person would be conducted.

During the search, the deputy located a clear container in Butler’s right front coin pocket containing a white crystalline substance, later identified as methamphetamine. Further search of the vehicle revealed several narcotics-related items, including marijuana, marijuana wax, and a “dab pen” in a black backpack located in the rear seat. Additionally, a black and silver 9mm handgun was discovered between the driver’s seat and center console, within reach of Butler.

Butler admitted ownership of the narcotics and stated that his passenger was unaware of the illegal substances. Butler was arrested and charged with the following offenses:

 

  • Possession of Controlled Substance 1st Degree, 1st Offense (Methamphetamine)
  • Possession of Synthetic Drugs – 1st Offense
  • Possession of Marijuana
  • Drug Paraphernalia – Buy/Possess
  • Failure of Owner to Maintain Required Insurance/ Security, 1st Offense
  • Failure to Produce Insurance Card
  • Rear License Plate Not Illuminated

Butler was transported to the Christian County Jail for processing.
