Early Morning Pursuit Leads to Drug/ Weapon Arrest

Christian County Sheriff's OfficeDeputies with the Christian County Sheriff’s Office arrested a Hopkinsville man after an early morning pursuit on Thursday morning.
 
According to an arrest citation, Sgt. Andy Spann observed a motorcycle traveling at a high rate of speed on Greenville Rd. at around 1:00 am. Sgt. Spann attempted to stop the vehicle for the infraction around the area of Carl Smith Rd. The driver, 37-year-old Donald Merritt, refused to stop and led officers on a brief pursuit through Hopkinsville. Merritt laid the motorcycle down around the area of Rozelle Drive and continued to flee on foot. After a brief foot chase, Merritt surrendered to authorities. A search of Merritt’s person yielded suspected cocaine and marijuana. Deputies also located a handgun in the area of the arrest. It was determined that Merritt was a convicted felon on parole out of Texas. Merritt was charged with the following:
 
-Speeding
-Fleeing/ Evading Police x 2 counts
-Possession of Cocaine
-Possession of Marijuana
-Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon
-Tampering with Physical Evidence
 
Merritt was transported to the Christian County Jail.
