Christian County Sheriff's Office Holiday Safety TipsThe Christian County Sheriff’s Office wants to make sure your Holidays are as safe and enjoyable as possible. As many of you know this is a prime time for scammers who would love nothing more than to take your money. It’s important to know what to look for, so we compiled some “Holiday Safety Tips” to help you and your family stay safe this year.

Shopping online has become a staple for consumers especially in 2020. 43% of online shoppers surveyed said their identity theft occurred during the holidays. It’s important to be vigilant before you hit the “purchase” button.

  • Have your purchases shipped to a secure location.
  • Have the option to save your credit card information on the site? Don’t. Enter in your card each time you purchase and make sure the retailer is valid.
  • Never make purchases over a public wi-fi connection.
  • As with any internet accounts, use strong passwords.
  • Avoid holiday scam emails. If you don’t know who they are, don’t send them a thing.
  • If you use a credit card to shop online, monitor your account, and routinely check your bank statements for any irregularities.
  • NEVER give a retailer your social security number. There is absolutely no reason they would need it.

Shopping in person? Practice these tips to stay secure while you’re buying those gifts.

  • Park in a well-lit area. PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR SURROUNDINGS as you walk to and from the store.
  • Always lock your vehicle.
  • Shop in pairs if you can. There is strength in numbers.
  • Never leave children alone. Before you go, teach your child what to do if you get separated.
  • Always secure your wallet, purse, or shopping bags as you roam from store to store.
  • Don’t flash large amounts of cash.
  • When you get back to your car, always have your keys ready so you aren’t fumbling.
  • NEVER leave packages in your car where they cab easily seen. Place them in the trunk or out of sight when possible.

We hope these tips will help you and your family stay safe during this busy time of year.
